The best time for a boat trip in Cape Town

Cape Town has a genuine best season for being on the water, and it is not the same as the best season for visiting the city. Here is the honest version, month by month.

The short answer

Late summer and early autumn, February to April, is the best time to be on the water here. The wind has eased off its December peak, the water is at its warmest, the days are still long, and the summer crowds have thinned.

Midsummer, December and January, is the busiest and windiest. Winter is quiet, green, and better than its reputation.

The wind is the thing

More charters move for wind than for anything else, and in Cape Town that means the south-easter: the summer wind that funnels around Table Mountain and blows hard from roughly November through February.

Two things worth knowing about it:

It builds through the day. Mornings are very often calm when the afternoon is not. If you are booking in peak wind season, book a morning departure.

It affects the two coasts differently. Table Bay and the Atlantic side take the brunt. False Bay, on the Simon's Town side, faces away from it and is frequently workable when the city side is not. If your date is fixed and the forecast looks bad, moving the base sometimes saves the day where moving the time does not.

Month by month

December – January. Peak everything: peak tourism, peak wind, peak prices, longest days. Beautiful when it is calm and genuinely unpleasant when it is not. Book mornings, book early, and expect company on the water.

February – March. The sweet spot. The south-easter eases, the water is at its warmest of the year, the days are still long, and the January crowds have gone home. If you can pick any month, pick these.

April – May. Autumn, and quietly excellent. Calm days, soft light, very few other boats. Days shorten, but an evening charter gets an earlier and often better sunset. The tuna are still out on the grounds.

June – August. Winter. Cold, wetter, and the season most people write off, wrongly. Southern right whales arrive in June and build toward a September peak. The tuna tail off through June. Between fronts you get flat, clear, windless days that summer rarely produces. Bring warm layers and take what the weather gives you.

September – October. Whale season peaks, and the tuna return in October. Wildflowers on the West Coast, which makes the Langebaan drive worth it in its own right. The wind starts returning late in October.

November. Summer arriving. The tuna are already back on the grounds, days lengthen, and the wind is not yet at its worst. An underrated month.

Water temperature

Worth knowing if anyone intends to swim, because the two coasts differ sharply.

The Atlantic side, Table Bay and the V&A, is cold all year. Summer upwelling can push it colder than winter. It rarely feels inviting without a wetsuit.

False Bay is meaningfully warmer, especially February to April. The Langebaan lagoon is warmest of all: shallow, sheltered, and it holds the day's heat.

• Southern right whales: June to December, peaking September and October

• Dolphins: all year, in large pods
• Seals: all year at Seal Island
• African penguins: all year at Boulders Beach

Booking around the weather

Two practical suggestions. Book earlier in your trip rather than later, so there is room to move if the weather turns. And book a morning between November and February.

Peak season runs October to April, off-peak May to September, with a surcharge over the mid-December to mid-January holidays and at Easter. December and January book out well in advance. For a year-end function or a Christmas-week charter, start in October.
