El Hombre
— The boat herself —

What she's like.

El Hombre is a Magnum 32: 10.2 metres of twin-hulled deep sea fishing boat on twin 300hp Suzukis, and one of the two largest hulls we run. She works out of Simon's Town, set up for fishing rather than cruising, and she is the boat that makes a long day on the reefs feel short.

What she carries

Ten anglers plus crew. That is a lot of rods on one deck, which is why the working space is laid out the way it is: rod holders down both sides, a central tackle station, and enough clear deck to fight a fish without three people reeling in around you.

Where she is allowed to go

Category B, registration DTR 872. Up to 40 nautical miles offshore, day and night, operating from an approved launch site or harbour along the South African coast in favourable sea and weather.

Twin 300s on a 10-metre hull means you spend less of the charter travelling and more of it fishing. When the marks are an hour out on a smaller boat, they are thirty-five minutes out on this one.

What she is used for

  • Inshore charters: trolling and reef fishing inside the bay, lines off at 12h00
  • Bottom and reef fishing: structured ground, targeting kob, kingklip, steenbras and the rest of the reef species. Shorter and more sheltered than an offshore day
  • Spear fishing: she carries a full complement of divers with room for gear, and doubles as a stable surface platform

Reef and spear days are enquiry-only charters. They depend on swell, visibility and permits, so we quote them individually rather than putting a book-now button on them. Tell us the date and the group size and we will come back with a price and an honest read on conditions.

What you need to bring

For fishing days: sea-sickness tablets taken an hour before departure, closed-toe shoes, and a valid recreational fishing licence. We will remind you about the licence the day before; it is the single most common thing people forget.

For spear days: your own gun and dive licence are mandatory, along with a valid recreational spear-fishing permit. We provide the spotter, surface support, dive flag and ice.

Booking her

Skipper, fuel, safety equipment and water are included. Rods and tackle are aboard and included; bring your own only if you prefer them.

If we cancel for weather you get a full refund or a new date, whichever you prefer.
